The gradient decides everything
Coogee falls from the Randwick ridge to the beach in a short distance, and almost every block is on a slope. That single fact drives the way work is done here: machines that can go down cannot always come back up, debris moves downhill easily and uphill expensively, and a crane setup needs level ground that many streets simply do not offer.
Combine that with the suburb's housing mix — 1960s and 70s red-brick walk-up blocks stacked along Arden, Dolphin and Brook streets, plus semis and free-standing houses on the higher ground — and most jobs are either strata work with a committee attached or a tight residential dismantle.
Cliff-top conditions
The headlands at each end of the bay, out toward Dolphin Point and Gordons Bay, take the full onshore weather. Trees on that frontage are salt-pruned to a hard windward face and often lean permanently inland. A lean the tree has grown into over decades is generally stable. A new lean, or cracked and lifted soil on the windward side, is not, and that is worth an arborist report rather than a guess.
The Norfolk Island pines along the beach reserve and Goldstein Reserve are Randwick City assets. Nobody touches those privately.
Soil and stumps
Behind the beach it is sand; up the hill it is thin soil over sandstone, the same as Randwick. Stump grinding therefore behaves completely differently at the bottom and the top of the same street — fast and clean in the sand, stopped by rock on the ridge. Council and permits

Frequently asked questions
Do strata blocks in Coogee need extra paperwork for tree work?
Usually. The owners corporation has to authorise the work, the strata manager will want certificates of currency for insurance, and if the job affects a footpath or common driveway there may be a pedestrian management plan. None of it is difficult, but it adds a fortnight or more, so start the approvals before you need the tree gone.
Can a chipper get down a steep Coogee driveway?
Sometimes down, not always back up. A loaded chipper on a wet, steep driveway is a real risk, and several Coogee driveways are steeper than they look from the street. Where the gradient is marginal the crew will work from the street and barrow down, which costs more time but avoids damage to a driveway or a retaining wall.
Which trees handle Coogee's exposure best?
The ones that were here first. Coastal banksia, tea tree, port jackson fig and tuckeroo all cope with wind and salt. The species that struggle are the thin-barked ornamentals planted in the seventies and eighties — silver birch, ornamental pear, Japanese maple — which scorch on the seaward side and then get blamed on disease.
