The peninsula in four strips
The Eastern Suburbs is small on a map and wildly variable on the ground. Four rough bands explain most of the difference in how tree work runs here.
The ocean front — Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra — is sand over sandstone, hit by salt-laden easterlies every afternoon. Trees here are wind-shaped, salt-burnt on the seaward face and often shallow-rooted. Norfolk Island pines line the beach reserves, and almost all of them belong to the council.
The cliff and harbour edge — Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Dover Heights — is steep, rocky and spectacular, which means crane work, view disputes and root systems wedged into sandstone joints.
The terrace belt — Paddington, parts of Woollahra and Bondi — has effectively no vehicle access to back gardens. Work is done by hand, through the house or over the roof.
The inner, sheltered gardens — Double Bay, Bellevue Hill, Randwick — hold the oldest and largest planted trees in the region, including enormous Moreton Bay figs with protected status and root plates that have been rearranging boundary walls since the 1930s.

Before you book, check the council
The three councils do not run identical rules. Waverley charges $77 to lodge an application on a single tree and $31 for each additional tree; Randwick charges $76 for a single tree. Woollahra adds a heritage layer across much of its area. The permit guide walks through what each one assesses.

Which councils cover the Eastern Suburbs?
Three of them do most of it. Waverley covers Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama and Waverley itself. Randwick City covers Randwick, Coogee, Maroubra, Clovelly, Kensington and south to La Perouse. Woollahra covers Paddington, Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, Watsons Bay and Woollahra. Each runs its own tree rules and its own fees.
Do you charge more to travel to some suburbs?
No. The whole area is compact enough that travel is not the variable — parking and access are. A job on a Paddington lane where the truck has to sit two streets away costs more than the same tree in Maroubra with a driveway, regardless of the distance from anywhere.
