Gardens worth more than the tree work
Double Bay sits in a sheltered valley off the harbour, which is exactly why it grows the biggest and softest garden trees in the Eastern Suburbs. Out of the salt wind, mature jacarandas, camphor laurels, magnolias, liquidambars, plane trees and a good number of large figs have had a century to get established behind the houses.
The tree work is rarely the hard part. What makes a job here demanding is everything around the tree: pools, sandstone terracing, glass balustrades, established planting and irrigation, and neighbours within a few metres on both sides. Woollahra Council is the tightest rulebook in the area
Woollahra applies strong tree preservation controls across its whole area and enforces them. On top of that, several Double Bay streets and the surrounding Woollahra and Bellevue Hill pockets sit in or adjoin heritage conservation areas, where mature trees form part of the assessed heritage character. That is a second approval layer, and it slows things down.
The practical consequence: nothing significant gets cut here without consent, and a credible application means a proper arborist report from someone qualified to AQF Level 5. Read the permit guide before you commission anything.
Access and parking
Cross Street, Bay Street, Knox and the lanes behind them have narrow carriageways, timed parking and constant delivery traffic. A tipper and chipper parked for a day needs planning, and for anything over a boundary a crane with a road occupancy licence is usually the answer.
The rear gardens are frequently landlocked — reachable only through the house or over the roof. Where that is the case we will say so at the quote, along with what it adds.
